  3. <hi style=afpcap>The F-22 is intended to cruise at supersonic speed to a high-risk area and engage opposing aircraft BVR (beyond visual range) but, if necessary, to outmaneuver them at closer range. A new, very advanced radar is crucial to the F-22 in BVR engagements. The F-22's underside has a weapon bay with serrated edges, for AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles. The aircraft also has side-mounted weapons bays just aft of the engine inlets for AIM-9M Sidewinders. A new generation AIM-9X missile is being developed for the F-22.</hi>
